Whether you’re considering purchasing a timber frame plan, designing a custom frame, or building a timber frame yourself, the questions below address some of the most common questions about our plans, design services, and timber frame construction.
Joint and Peg plans give you the flexibility to plan your project yourself or have the work quoted by others. Having these options puts you in an advantageous position when planning your project.
Joint & Peg offers several documentation options for each design, allowing you to select the level of information appropriate for your project.
The Planning Package provides the information needed for early-stage project planning, preliminary approvals, contractor pricing, and general material quantities. Additional documentation is available when construction drawings and engineering are required.
That depends on your skill level. One of our goals is to open the doors of timber framing to builders, carpenters, and DIY’s. The best of designs still requires a certain baseline of the builder to be able to know the basic concepts of construction.
If you intend to build the timber frame yourself, you’ll need the appropriate construction documentation for the project in addition to the necessary skills, tools, and equipment.
Yes. The plans provide your builder with the information needed to understand the timber frame, determine the materials required, and develop a construction estimate. You can provide the plans to a timber framer, contractor, or qualified tradesperson when requesting a quote.
Timbers are heavy! Timbers are not 2x lumber that can be easily lifted. Material handling is often underestimated when it comes to timber frame projects. The smallest timbers typically are 4×6. Planning to work with material that is heavy is imperative. A good mind for logistics and staging is well suited for this craft.
Some of our plans include options for metal hardware connections. Our 16×31 Sawmill Plan is a plan that provides you with both authentic timber frame joinery and metal hardware connection options!
