Description
Plans and Shop Drawings
This 18×20 dogleg frame is a unique structure for your backyard, garden, or field. Measured at the posts it is 18’ wide x 20’ long. It contains 3 posts per side spaced equidistant. Joint and Peg currently offers a plan package including wood lists, core plan views, elevations, and single beam shop drawings. These plans are drawn on letter-sized sheets and are delivered immediately upon your order as electronic .pdf files.
Classic Elevation Proportions
With a 5/12 roof slope this dogleg frame design measures out at just under 13’ tall. The eaves are roughly 7’ 6” high. Combined the structure provides great shade along with a comfortable environment for any open air uses you can dream of. Put a fireplace or bar at one end and you could entertain in style.
Vaulted Ceiling with Purlins
The vaulted ceiling has common purlins that are slightly let into the principal rafters. You can hang lights or ceiling fans from the purlins and ridge beam. We envision running metal roofing right up the roof on top of the purlins saving from having to use tongue and groove roof decking. The space provides just the right amount of openness without feeling too vast.
Slab Or Strong Spot Piers
We provide one option for post connection with these plans that makes use of a steel plate that slots into the bottom of the timber post. You will want to make sure that it’s a good connection whichever you pursue. The dogleg frame brace pushes on the post a good amount. This post to foundation connection needs to be robust!
Materials
This design utilizes 1/2″ Under Nominal 4×6 purlins, 6×6 Girts, 6×8 Struts and Ridge Beam, and 6×10 Posts. Select a strong species of timber.

Important Info
Every state, county or municipality will have its own building and code requirements as environments differ from one region to the next. It is possible that your plan may need to be modified to comply with these local requirements and conditions. This is particularly true in coastal areas and those facing seismic events, extreme winds, and heavy snow.
If you are building in any of these areas and depending on the size and purpose of the structure, it is likely that a licensed structural engineer will be needed to provide the necessary calculations and stamp.
All pre-drawn plans from Joint and Peg do not carry a stamp from a licensed architect or a licensed engineer. Please understand that we will not be held responsible for the performance and suitability of this design plan as we don’t know the criteria with where you plan to build, nor the material to be used, nor any additional structure to be implemented in the construction.
If this is a requirement from your local building department, or it proves to be the prudent thing to do, Joint and Peg can provide you state sealed engineered drawings for an additional fee. When it comes to the time to build, we highly recommend that you enlist our engineering service. Otherwise, the onus of this structure’s performance is solely with others, not Joint and Peg.
Single Use Terms
We authorize the use of our plans for one single project; conditioned on your obligation and agreement to comply with all local building codes, ordinances, regulations, and requirements, including permits and inspections at the time of and during construction. Multiplied use of our plans is prohibited. Thank you.
