Description

A Large Timber Frame Barn for Equipment, Storage, and More

The Big Gable Barn is a substantial 70×48 timber frame barn designed to provide generous, open space beneath a classic gable roof. Its exposed timber framing, traditional barn proportions, and multiple large openings create a versatile structure suited to a variety of agricultural, equipment storage, workshop, and property-use applications.

With an overall footprint of approximately 3,280 square feet, the Big Gable Barn offers considerable covered space while showcasing the character and structural expression of traditional timber frame construction. Its straightforward barn form and carefully arranged timber members make it an appealing option for property owners looking for a large, functional building with lasting architectural character.

Large loft in the trusses above.

There is a large second floor loft that is atop the queen post trusses’ bottom chords.  This loft takes up 3 aisles.  A stair opening can be placed along here at any point.

Drive through with big barn doors.

There are (2) large barn doors that slide open on each gable end allowing a vehicle to drive all the way through impeded.  The doors can also create a nice breeze through the barn too.

Project Planning Package

The Big Gable Barn Planning Package is designed to help you evaluate the project, plan your build, and begin gathering preliminary construction costs before committing to a full construction drawing set.

Your Planning Package includes:

  • Architectural drawings showing the overall dimensions and layout of the structure.
  • Elevations and sections illustrating the barn’s proportions, roof profile, and timber-frame arrangement.
  • Timber-frame diagrams providing a visual reference for the principal structural members and their configuration.
  • Preliminary timber and lumber lists to help estimate the general quantity of wood required for the project.
  • Scaled drawings to support preliminary planning, project discussions, and estimating.
  • A useful starting point for pricing with your preferred builder, timber supplier, or local contractor.

These documents are intended to help you understand the project, explore its feasibility, and obtain preliminary pricing before moving forward with construction planning.

Plan Your Build with Confidence

The Big Gable Barn Planning Package provides a practical first step toward developing a substantial timber frame building. Use the drawings and preliminary material lists to discuss your project with local builders, evaluate material requirements, and determine the next steps for your specific site.

For projects requiring detailed construction documentation, additional specifications, or engineering, Joint and Peg can discuss the appropriate next steps with you.

Important Plan Information

This is a Daesign-only Planning Package, not a complete set of engineered construction documents. Drawings are diagrammatic and intended to communicate the general design and material requirements. Preliminary wood lists provide estimated quantities based on the illustrated design and are not final purchasing or fabrication documents.

Site-specific structural requirements, including applicable wind and snow loads, material specifications, connections, foundations, and local building-code requirements, must be evaluated by the owner and their qualified building professionals. Additional engineering or construction documentation may be required before building.

Each purchase grants the right to construct the design one time. Joint and Peg retains ownership of the plans, and additional builds require written permission.

Planning vs. Construction

Project Planning Package

The Project Planning Package is designed for the early stages of a project, when you are evaluating the design, developing costs, coordinating the project, and deciding how you want to proceed.

It is useful for:

  • Deciding whether to move forward with construction

Project Construction Package

The Project Construction Package is designed for customers who are ready to move from planning to fabrication and construction.

It provides detailed timber-frame documentation needed to fabricate and assemble the frame, including construction drawings, timber member information, joinery details, and shop drawing information.

It is useful for:

  • Fabricating the timber frame
  • Preparing timbers for layout and cutting
  • Understanding individual members and their connections
  • Planning frame assembly
  • Providing detailed information to builders and timber framers

In Simple Terms

Planning = Understand, price, coordinate, and prepare.

Construction = Fabricate and build.

Important Info

Every state, county or municipality will have its own building and code requirements as environments differ from one region to the next. It is possible that your plan may need to be modified to comply with these local requirements and conditions. This is particularly true in coastal areas and those facing seismic events, extreme winds, and heavy snow.

If you are building in any of these areas and depending on the size and purpose of the structure, it is likely that a licensed structural engineer will be needed to provide the necessary calculations and stamp.

All pre-drawn plans from Joint and Peg do not carry a stamp from a licensed architect or a licensed engineer. Please understand that we will not be held responsible for the performance and suitability of this design plan as we don’t know the criteria with where you plan to build, nor the material to be used, nor any additional structure to be implemented in the construction.

If this is a requirement from your local building department, or it proves to be the prudent thing to do, Joint and Peg can provide you state sealed engineered drawings for an additional fee. When it comes to the time to build, we highly recommend that you enlist our engineering service.  Otherwise, the onus of this structure’s performance is solely with others, not Joint and Peg.

Single Use Terms

We authorize the use of our plans for one single project; conditioned on your obligation and agreement to comply with all local building codes, ordinances, regulations, and requirements, including permits and inspections at the time of and during construction. Multiplied use of our plans is prohibited. Thank you.
